A Frontline Officer Tells What It Was Like To Keep As Many Of His Men Alive As Possible

First Lieutenant George M. Papa, Infantry, I Corp, Americal Division, kicks the lid off of all the hype

WEBWIRE

50 years ago, in 1970, the unwinnable Vietnam War was winding down. Already, entire Divisions in the south were “standing down” and leaving Vietnam. But not in the north. There the war was intensifying. Casualties were up and morale was down, but it would be 3 more years before all the GIs would be gone.

Few who were there can even talk about it. 1Lt. George Papa is a rare exception. In honor of those who were there, and those back home who had no idea what was actually going on, but still want to know what their husbands, sons, brothers, uncles or now even fathers went through, this is the book – bar none.

Go with Lt. Papa on two Search and Destroy missions. One was off of LZ Professional and the other was off of LZ Mary Ann. Look ‘em up on the internet. They both got destroyed by the enemy and both of them, in succession, were Lt. Papa’s Battalion HQs.

This book is not for the faint of heart. Surprises were endless, stakes were high and mistakes were fatal. Here is a chilling glimpse of what truly happened, deep under the vast triple canopy of that cathedral jungle. Many were the helicopter crashes, the booby traps, the mortars, grenades, bombs, bullets, artillery blasts, air strikes, napalm, body bags and dust offs (medevac extractions). Aside from all that, the leaches, mosquitoes, rain and mud plus exhaustion, blood and despair were a mere asterisk to ultimate survival. This has to be a good book. North Vietnam has a copy of it, and they are still waiting to cooperate with an epic feature film that covers every page of this classic, which is far above any other book on this topic.

Papa’s signature screenplay style of writing is on full display in this book, which includes abundant pictures that depict both sides of that conflict, which does capture the reality of that war. Included is not only the bad, the worse and the ugly, but occasionally the downright good and the funny too. Learn what went on in Saigon, Washington, Hanoi, plus up and down Highway One, and in Da Nang, Chu Lai, Hue, the A Shau Valley, plus deep in that foreboding cat-and-mouse jungle.

Now 50 years later, there may still be a few who will read this book and they will light up and shout: ‘Wow! I remember when that happened!’ In the end, the only reason the chain of events for the overrun of LZ Mary Ann are so accurate and detailed is because Mr. Papa was able to obtain many separate depositions and accounts from other survivors of that battle from the archives of the pentagon. Also, at the conclusion, Mr. Papa explains why that war was a mere civil religious war between the majority Buddhists and the minority but corrupt and controlling Catholic regime, and we fought on the wrong side.
