Identifying Carcinogens in Occupational and Residential Environments in Support of National Cancer Prevention Month

EMSL Analytical provides industrial hygiene and environmental testing services to identify chemical, radiological and biological hazards.

In 2020, the National Cancer Institute estimated that over 1.8 million new cases of cancer would be diagnosed in the United States. Family history, diet, exercise, and many other factors can also impact a person’s chance of potentially developing cancer.

A significant percentage of these cancers can also be attributed to preventable causes. Environmental exposures to known and probable carcinogens can occur both in the home and the workplace. In the home, exposure to tobacco smoke, radon, formaldehyde and asbestos are all potential hazards. There are also numerous products found in or around many homes that contain carcinogens.

In the workplace, NIOSH reported that millions of U.S. workers are exposed to substances that have been tested as carcinogens in animal studies or found to be possibly carcinogenic in human studies.  NIOSH has even published a list that it considers to be potential occupational carcinogens. It includes everything from diesel exhaust and asphalt fumes to wood dust, benzene and crystalline silica to name just a few of the potential occupational carcinogens on their long list. Many of these substances are addressed in specific OSHA standards.

“The month of February is designated as National Cancer Prevention Month to increase cancer awareness,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “It is an annual opportunity to educate people on factors that are known to increase the risk of cancer and what steps to take that can reduce your risk. At EMSL, our laboratories across the United States and Canada offer industrial hygiene and environmental testing for a wide range of carcinogens through air, water, soil, dust, surface and bulk material testing. We even provide air monitoring instruments and easy-to-use test kits to identify exposure risks and carry a full line of personal protective equipment (PPE).”

EMSL also recently sponsored an educational video about National Cancer Prevention Month that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/d3twvxX1j4o.
