National Cancer Prevention Month and Identifying Exposure Risks to Carcinogens in California

A California program that collaborates with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and several other entities, reported that an estimated 1 out of every 2 Californians born today will develop cancer. The program also reported that more than 175,000 people in California will be diagnosed with some form of cancer this year.

A significant portion of cancer deaths in California and across the nation can be attributed to preventable causes. To help raise awareness of ways to avert new cancer cases, the month of February is designated as National Cancer Prevention Month. It is an annual opportunity to educate the public about the many ways they can lower their chances of developing cancer through healthy living and by avoiding exposure to carcinogens in the home and on the job.

A carcinogen is a substance known to cause cancer. Exposure alone doesn’t mean someone will develop a form of cancer, but it can raise their chances. Carcinogens can be found in many residential and work environments. These include everything from tobacco smoke and asbestos fibers to radon gas or exposure to certain chemicals. In the work environment, the list of known carcinogens is large. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) provides a list of substances the agency considers to be potential occupational carcinogens that contains well over 100 substances. They include everything from diesel exhaust and wood dust to gasoline, formaldehyde and silica. Unfortunately, countless workers in California are still exposed to these materials, dusts, fumes, fibers and gases on a daily basis.
