Forbes released the 2020 Midas List Europe, the definitive ranking of the top 25 venture capital investors in Europe and Israel. The list was produced for the fourth consecutive year in partnership with TrueBridge Capital Partners.

·       Index Ventures investor Jan Hammer maintains his spot at the top for the third year in succession, largely due to the continued success of Adyen, the Netherlands-based payments company which has a market cap of €53 billion, and investments in unicorns Collibra, Robinhood and TransferWise.

·       “Against the backdrop of a turbulent year for our global economy, Europe hasn’t seen the big tech IPOs that the U.S. has in the past 12 months, but the region’s venture capitalists are continuing to battle to identify and invest in the sector-redefining businesses of tomorrow and will be hopeful for a big 2021,” said Forbes Senior Editor Alex Konrad. “Notably, women and people of color remain underrepresented on the list, reflecting the broader need for more equitable representation within the global VC ecosystem.”

·       Sonali De Rycker of Accel (No. 2), the highest ranked woman on the list, and Danny Rimer of Index Ventures (No. 3) round out the top three. Just two newcomers make the list: Gil Dibner of Angular Ventures at No. 21, and Johan Brenner of Creandum at No. 23.

·       In addition to De Rycker three additional women appeared on this year’s ranking including Luciana Lixandru (No. 12), Reshma Sohoni (No. 18) and Laurel Bowden (No. 20). Lixandru notably switched firms from Accel in March, helping to launch Sequoia’s first European office in London.

·       The leading firms on the list include: Index Ventures (3 investors on the list); Accel (3); Creandum (2); LocalGlobe (2); Seedcamp (2)

Methodology

Forbes’ Midas List Europe receives submissions from dozens of Europe’s and Israel’s leading venture capital firms. Forbes and data partner TrueBridge Capital Partners run that data through a proprietary model that evaluates investors by their portfolio companies valued at $200 million or more or that exited at $100 million or more, factoring in the stage, size and returns of such deals. Spanning early and later stage investments, Forbes’ Midas List Europe recognizes bolder and bigger bets.
