New Directors Elected at Hearst


Hearst announced the election of four new directors to the corporation’s board: Carlton Charles, Hearst senior vice president, treasury and risk management; Debi Chirichella, Hearst senior vice president and president of Hearst Magazines; Gregory Dorn, MD, Hearst senior vice president and president of Hearst Health; and Gillian Hearst-Shaw, a contributing editor at Town & Country and a great-granddaughter of William Randolph Hearst. The announcement was made by Steven R. Swartz, president and CEO of Hearst, and William R. Hearst III, chairman of the board. With this election, there are now 26 members of the board of directors, elected by the trustees of the Hearst Family Trust.

Charles was named Hearst senior vice president, treasury and risk management in November. He also is responsible for the company’s insurance operations and is heading up an effort to further diversify the company’s roster of vendor partners.

Charles joined Hearst in 2011 from Moody’s Corporation, where he was senior vice president, treasurer and chief operational risk officer. He serves on the board of BUILD, which teaches entrepreneurship to youth in underserved communities. He is a member of the Executive Leadership Council and National Association of Corporate Directors, where he is a governance fellow. Charles holds an MBA in finance from the University of Chicago, and a master’s in public policy and a bachelor’s in quantitative economics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Chirichella was named president of Hearst Magazines in November, having served as acting president of Hearst Magazines since July. Hearst Magazines is one of the world’s largest publishers of magazine media across all platforms, with more than 300 editions and 245 websites around the world, including more than 25 brands in the U.S. She was previously executive vice president and chief financial officer of Hearst Magazines, overseeing strategic financial planning and reporting and international operations. Chirichella joined the company in 2011 as senior vice president and chief financial officer.

Prior to joining Hearst, Chirichella served as chief operating officer of Condé Nast Digital beginning in 2008 and took on the same responsibility at Fairchild Fashion Group a year later until 2011. She was chief financial officer of Condé Nast from 2004 to 2008. Additionally, Chirichella was at Primedia for nine years, where she held a number of senior-level positions, including chief operating officer and executive vice president of operations. Chirichella earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Princeton University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Dorn was named president of Hearst Health in October 2014. The mission of Hearst Health is to guide the most important care moments by delivering vital information into the hands of everyone who touches a person’s health journey. Each year in the U.S., care guidance from Hearst Health reaches 85% of discharged patients, 205 million insured individuals, 103 million home health visits and 3.2 billion dispensed prescriptions.

He has held a variety of leadership positions across Hearst’s healthcare businesses, including president of FDB from 2010 to 2014 and executive vice president of Zynx Health from 2004 to 2010. Dorn received an MD from Columbia University, his bachelor’s degree from the Columbia University School of Engineering and a master’s degree in health services management from UCLA.

Hearst-Shaw was named a contributing editor of Town & Country in November 2013, having held a variety of positions at the magazine since joining in January 2007, including society editor, associate editor and assistant editor. She was also an assistant at Bonhams in 2005. Hearst-Shaw attended Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business and holds a bachelor’s degree.

Hearst-Shaw is current chair of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Associates Committee and co-chair of the associates of the Good+Foundation. She also is actively involved in fundraising for the Wildlife Conservation Society, Central Park Conservancy, GMHC and the New York Botanical Garden.
