New California Law Bans Two Dozen Ingredients from Beauty and Personal Care Products

LA Testing offers a wide range of chemical, microbial and sterility testing services for cosmetics and other consumer goods.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

In late September, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 2762. Also known as the Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act, the new law makes California the first state to ban 24 ingredients from beauty and personal care items.

The new law goes into effect on January 1st, 2025 and requires that no person or entity manufacture, sell, deliver, hold or offer for sale in commerce any cosmetic product that contains any of the 24 ingredients listed in the bill that are intentionally added as an ingredient. Included in the list of banned ingredients are substances like mercury, formaldehyde, phthalates and other chemicals.

“The ingredients that will no longer be allowed in these products throughout California have already been banned in various other countries across the globe, including those that make up the European Union,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “Beauty and personal care items are used by many in California on a daily basis, so banning toxic items like mercury and formaldehyde is great news for consumers.”

The scientists at LA Testing and their network of laboratories across North America support manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, regulatory agencies and consumers with testing services to ensure that products meet health and safety requirements. They offer comprehensive chemical, microbial and sterility testing services for cosmetics, beauty products, personal care items and other consumer goods.
