November is recognized as Lung Cancer Awareness Month and is an ideal time to raise awareness and engagement in the fight against the disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and that more men and women die from lung cancer than from any other type of cancer. Fortunately, lung cancer rates are decreasing nationally, as fewer people smoke cigarettes.

While cigarette smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer, there are a number of other known carcinogens that people can be exposed to in the work environment or even in their own home. Asbestos, arsenic, radon, formaldehyde, diesel exhaust, and some forms of silica and chromium are just a few of the many airborne carcinogens that some people are exposed to on a regular basis.

In the work environment, there are a number of health and safety regulations meant to protect workers from exposure to hazardous fumes, gases, mists and dusts. Mitigating exposure risks can be achieved through training, personal protective equipment (PPE), monitoring, and engineering and administrative controls.

“November is recognized as Lung Cancer Awareness Month and is an ideal time to raise awareness and engagement in the fight against the disease,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “We know so much today about so many airborne carcinogens and how to protect workers and the public from exposure. This is why our team of dedicated indoor environmental quality and industrial hygiene professionals have been providing testing, monitoring, training and consulting services for almost two decades in Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean. Not only do these services protect workers and the public, they are also essential for keeping companies and institutions in compliance with health and safety regulations and environmental laws.”
