EPA Releases Final Risk Evaluation for 1-Bromopropane and EHS Resources for Companies in Puerto Rico

Zimmetry Environmental provides testing and consulting services to identify and mitigate occupational exposure risks to 1-BP and other chemical hazards throughout the Caribbean.

Bayamon, Puerto Rico – WEBWIRE

There are many workers in various industries in Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean that could be exposed to 1-BP by breathing in vapors or mists of the solvent.

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently completed their final risk evaluation for 1-bromopropane (1-BP). It contains the agency’s final determinations on which conditions of use present unreasonable risks to human health or the environment based on a review of scientific data. For this evaluation, EPA reviewed 25 conditions of 1-BP use, such as a solvent in vapor degreasing, dry cleaning, spot cleaners, stain removers, adhesives, sealants and automobile care products.

Four years prior, the agency had released a draft risk assessment of 1-BP. That document estimated there could be over 48,000 workers and occupational non-users potentially at risk of exposure due to common uses. It showed acute risks to women of childbearing age from adverse developmental effects. Other non-cancer and cancer health risks were identified for workers with repeated and chronic exposures. These included neurotoxicity; kidney, liver and reproductive toxicity; and lung cancer.

In the final risk evaluation, published in August, EPA found unreasonable risks to human health from 16 out of 25 conditions. This included unreasonable risks to consumers and bystanders from all consumer uses of 1-BP evaluated except for one (insulation off-gassing). In addition, EPA also found unreasonable risks to workers from most commercial uses of 1-BP, including unreasonable risks from most commercial uses of this chemical to workers nearby, but not in direct contact with 1-BP (occupational non-users).

“There are many workers in various industries in Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean that could be exposed to 1-BP by breathing in vapors or mists of the solvent,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Businesses that utilize 1-BP and other solvents need to protect their workers from exposure risks or they could be putting them in danger and may face costly citations. At Zimmetry, our industrial hygiene and environmental professionals monitor for 1-BP and other respirable hazards. We also provide consulting services to enhance workplace engineering controls and personal protective equipment use to mitigate exposure hazards.”
