Siemens Business Services implements SAP solution for planning oil and gas reserves at BASF subsidiary Wintershall

Munich, Dec 11, 2006 - Germany’s largest oil and gas producer, wholly-owned BASF subsidiary Wintershall, is optimizing the planning of its global raw material reserves with an IT solution from Siemens Business Services. To this end, Siemens Business Services is currently implementing a system on the basis of SAP’s Business Warehouse at 12 Wintershall locations worldwide.

Wintershall plans the exploitation of its oil and gas reserves over periods that often exceed thirty years, and updates these forecasts annually: How much oil and gas will we produce next year? How much will we sell? What expenditures are planned over the coming years?

In the past, coordinating these global production and sales figures, as well as income and expenditures, required a lot of manual effort at the company’s headquarters in Kassel, Germany. In the future, all of Wintershall’s worldwide locations, including those in Argentina, Libya, Russia, the Netherlands and Germany, will accomplish this task with an SAP-based system. Wintershall is implementing this solution to reduce its substantial coordination effort and improve and accelerate its entire planning system by integrating the collected data seamlessly into the company’s financial and accounting systems. Linking the planning process to the financial systems will make it a lot easier to assess the impact of oil and gas production on the company’s overall situation and also enable headquarters to compare targets with actual figures at all times.

Wintershall, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BASF AG in Ludwigshafen, has its headquarters in Kassel and has been active in oil and gas exploration and production for more than 75 years. Wintershall deliberately focuses on selected core regions where the company possesses a wealth of regional and technological expertise. These regions include Europe, North Africa and South America, as well as Russia and the Caspian area. Wintershall is the largest oil and gas producer headquartered in Germany.
