Springer Science+Business Media, the world’s largest science, technology and medicine book publisher, won the prize for the Best STM Information Product of 2006 for the Springer eBook Collection. The prize was presented at the fourth annual International Information Industry Awards ceremony which took place last night at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. Hosted by the international exhibition and conference Online Information 2006 and the publication Information World Review, the awards recognize the achievements of information teams, information and content management projects, vendors and individual information professionals.

Olaf Ernst, Vice President of E-Product Management at Springer, accepted the prize. “We are thrilled with this award which recognizes our pioneering achievements in electronic publishing. A large and dedicated team at Springer has been working toward tailoring our eBook offer to the needs of our customers in science and research. We not only provide the latest and most convenient technology, but also customized ownership business models. This prize certainly rewards our efforts.”

Currently nearly 15,000 eBooks are available, with approximately 3,000 new Springer titles to be added every year. Libraries can purchase a complete collection of all Springer titles from a copyright year or they can choose to purchase one or more of 13 subjects, for example engineering, medicine, computer science, mathematics, etc. Universities or companies that purchase the 2007 Springer eBook Collection by the end of this year will get the electronic versions of all Springer books published in 2005 and 2006 as well. Individual eBooks are available from retail partners.

Springer allows unlimited simultaneous access to eBooks. Once a library purchases Springer’s eBook Collection, they own the book content of the purchased copyright year for their use in perpetuity. The eBooks’ PDF and HTML documents are fully searchable and can be downloaded and printed. Springer’s online platform, SpringerLink, now integrates Springer eBooks with millions of articles from Springer’s peer-reviewed journals. This integration gives researchers easy access to book chapters which should lead to more academic citations of Springer’s books.

Springer is a leading international scientific publishing company for print and online content with a reputation for excellence since 1842. It publishes over 1,250 journals and 3,500 new book titles each year, and offers online scientific information such as peer-reviewed journals, eReferences, eBooks and an Online Archives Collection via SpringerLink, its electronic platform. Springer is part of Springer Science+Business Media, which employs some 5,000 dedicated professionals at 70 publishing companies in more than 20 countries throughout the world.
