Coca-Cola employees collect over 1,000 bags of litter in one week

More than 1,000 employees from Coca-Cola European Partners and The Coca-Cola Company joined forces to collect over 1,000 bags of litter as part of a week of volunteering in 14 countries across Western Europe. This is Forward week brought Coca-Cola employees together with their local communities to focus on the companies’ sustainability commitments and to encourage volunteering.

Launched in 2017, This Is Forward is the companies’ joint sustainability action plan in Western Europe. The plan sets out the companies’ action on five key areas, including packaging: Coca-Cola is committed to collecting 100% of its packaging in Western Europe and making 100% of its primary packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025, ensuring that none of it ends up as litter or in the oceans.

Coca-Cola employees collected 1,029 bags of litter from roadsides, beaches and city waterways. Employees in Bulgaria collected the most litter and therefore received a prize of €10,000 to donate to a local charity of their choice.

During This Is Forward Week, Coca-Cola employees have also:

  • Hosted a breakfast with JINC, dedicated to giving young people in the Netherlands a head-start in the labour market by offering advice for job interviews
  • Volunteered in support of Special Olympics athletes in Belgium, during their National Games
  • Visited Les Resto du Coeur in France - an organisation which provides people in need with access to free meals - to understand how they could get involved all year long

The week also supports Coca-Cola European Partners new volunteering policy, which encourages employees to take up to two paid working days a year to volunteer for a charity or cause of their choice.

Commenting on This is Forward Week, Joe Franses, Vice President of Sustainability at Coca-Cola European Partners, said: “Sustainability underpins every part of our business. During This Is Forward Week, everyone at CCEP takes one small action to support our sustainability commitments. Our co-ordinated litter pick was a small step in a much broader journey towards ensuring that none of our packaging ends up as litter or in the oceans. We’re already collecting nearly two thirds of the bottles we sell, and using recycled plastic in about a third of our bottles. We’re pushing ourselves to go further, faster, and every person in our business has a role to play.”

More information about This is Forward and CCEP’s commitments on packaging and society can be found on the CCEP website.
