EMSL’s Food Laboratory Offers Pet Product-Related Testing

EMSL Analytical, Inc. offers testing services for pet food and treats. Recalls for pet products can be just as common as human-consumption food products. In addition to the nutritional testing for pet food products, EMSL’s Food Laboratory Division is set-up for other important pet product-related testing services:
 

• AAFCO Guaranteed Analysis  – Nutritional testing for Crude Fat, Moisture, Protein, Ash and Crude Fiber that reports the minimum percentages of Protein and Crude Fat and maximum percentages of Crude Fiber and Moisture. This analysis package also includes values for Calories and Carbohydrates. It is a common practice to validate supplier ingredient information, as well, to make sure the information displayed is accurate.

• Vitamin D A nalysis  – There have been recalls recently for pet products that are too high in Vitamin D. EMSL can perform Vitamin D testing to identify if a product has acceptable limits of this vitamin.

• Pathogen Analysis  – Pet treats can be recalled for suspected pathogens such as Salmonella, Listeria or coli O157. EMSL can test for these pathogens in a finished product or in an environmental sample such as a swab or sponge. It’s important to note that safety testing is on-going and conducted routinely.

• Mycotoxin Analysis  – Aflatoxins, Ochratoxin and Vomitoxin are a few of the common mycotoxins analyzed by EMSL. There have been recalls for excessive levels of these toxins in pet products.
