This book gives an excellent understanding of the beginnings of Christianity. I do not identify as a Christian but I love historical fiction. Joseph Nyce, a Bible studies moderator turned author, has written a book, Mary’s Lament that supposes a talking Mary rife with emotions during Jesus’s time. But beyond personifying what is Biblical, the book discusses the historical impact of religion over generations, offering plenty of reflections regarding faith and spiritual belief.

“Mary’s Lament” is well-received in the spiritual community, earning positive reviews. From Tim Mathews, D.Sc., Mayor, of East Amwell Twp. NJ, “Through Mary’s plaintive eyes, Joseph Nyce illustrates a historically rich and thought-provoking story about individuals who knew and were spiritually impacted by the life, teachings and death of Jesus.”

Another review, from Jeremy I. Adelman, Ph.D., Professor of History Princeton University, said that “He invites the reader to re-live history with a profound spiritual purpose.”

It isn’t a surprise that Joseph Nyce has written a well-researched book, he graduated from the Princeton Theology Seminary and earned his Master of Divinity and PhD degrees. His goal of exploring, through Mary’s narratives of the tragic religious history of violence, presents a fresh look at the violent beginnings of Christianity.

According to him, “The violence of nascent Christianity still haunts us through the barriers of belief, and we can explore this transformative time in our religious history to discover a deeper meaning of faith through imagining real persons caught up in this division of faith between two groups of people devoted to the same God and agreeing that righteousness was the way to honor him.”

“Mary’s Lament” will be displayed in the upcoming Word on the Street, the biggest literary events in Canada this year on June 9 in Saskatoon, September 14 in Halifax, on September 21 in Lethbridge, and lastly on September 22 in Toronto.
