Wood Recognized for Design Engineering Excellence

Wood, with the Saint John Clean Water Project team, received an Engineering Excellence Award from the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – New Brunswick for its cost-effective, sustainable design of a new drinking water treatment facility and storage reservoirs.

Saint John’s water system was developed in 1837 and some of the city’s most system-critical piping dates to 1874. To deliver safer drinking water and reduce water disruptions for residents, the city used a public-private partnership model to develop the project, which is the single largest municipal infrastructure project undertaken in the province’s history.

The project included the rehabilitation of cast iron mains for water transmission and design of a new 75,000-cubic-meter per day surface water treatment plant, 33,000 cubic meters of new storage reservoirs and a 18,000-cubic-meter per day groundwater wellfield. The facility is designed to minimize the environmental footprint of the plant’s operations and meets Canadian and New Brunswick water quality standards.

Ann Massey, CEO of Wood’s Environment and Infrastructure Solutions business, said: “It is a privilege to receive this award in recognition of our commitment to excellence and delivery of sustainable, cost-effective and value-added solutions. We are proud to have played a part in ensuring the fundamental need for safe, clean and reliable water is met for the Saint John community.”
