Bovine and Swine Drugs Recalled Due to Potential Sterility Issues

In March, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about the recall of multiple lots of three injectable drugs used on cattle and pigs. The recall to the veterinarian and consumer levels of these products that were distributed nationwide was issued as a precautionary measure after the company announced product sterility could not be assured.

The recall notice states, “There is a concern that if the sterility of these products has been compromised, use of these products could result in introduction of infectious agents to the animal. This may result in the need for medical intervention(s) including, but not limited to the need for supportive care, antibiotics, and/or antifungal drugs.” Fortunately, at the time of the recall notice, the drug manufacturer had not received any reports of adverse events related to the injectable parasiticides and the drug for the treatment and control of swine and bovine respiratory diseases.
