University Owned Methamphetamine Contaminated Apartment in California

LA Testing provides analytical services, sampling supplies and test kits to identify hazardous residues from methamphetamines left on surfaces in all types of properties.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

The Daily Californian published an article earlier this year about potential dangers lurking in a shuttered apartment at the UC Berkley University Village in Albany, California. According to their report, one suite at the complex had been quarantined after levels of methamphetamine that were 200 times what is considered safe were detected in the unit.

The article also states that a campus spokesperson said the apartment was not used as a meth lab, but rather the contamination was due to consumption of the illegal drug. The unit will remain quarantined until the hazardous residues and remnants are removed from the apartment.

Unfortunately, large amounts of methamphetamine come into the U.S. every year. Equally threatening to society are the countless clandestine meth labs scattered across California and the rest of the United States. Places where significant amounts of this drug are used, stored or manufactured can endanger not only the people involved with these hazardous substances, but also neighbors, future building occupants and the environment.

“Residues from the use of meth, and certainly the hazardous chemicals used in their production, are dangerous for first responders and anyone in the area,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Meth-associated chemicals and fumes can contaminate surfaces or materials such as carpeting, wallboard, ceiling tiles, furniture and fabrics that absorb spilled or vaporized chemicals. These chemical remnants can later be emitted as hazardous gases back into the air or be a potential hazard when touched. This is why these types of contaminated properties need to be identified and then properly remediated so they don’t become a potential hazard for future building occupants. In a number of states, a qualified hazard assessment and remediation may be required to comply with existing laws and regulations.”

To help in these situations, LA Testing provides laboratory services to identify residues and has developed a Methamphetamine Test Kit. The kit provides a simple method to collect a sample that is then sent off to the laboratory. The laboratory professionals at LA Testing have also produced an instructional video that describes common meth sampling techniques that can be viewed at: https://youtu.be/ADQbHagMJ10.
