The University of Waterloo has announced that PerkinElmer, Inc. – a global leader in life science lab instruments, software and services -- has relocated its Canadian demonstration lab to the Velocity Garage, an incubator that has launched over 300 companies.

The move, to be completed in April, gives PerkinElmer a dynamic environment for hosting its customers and, in turn, provides deep-tech and science entrepreneurs in the Velocity community access to the innovations and experts of PerkinElmer.

“PerkinElmer is all about innovating to create a better world- be that in maternal and infant health, rare disease study, pharmaceutical advancement, food safety and quality, or environmental testing and more,” said Tim Freeman, Canadian Regional Sales Manager, PerkinElmer, Inc. “Putting our Canadian customer lab into a leading incubator like Velocity is a natural fit. We look forward to bringing our passion for science to the community there, and to  connecting with Velocity entrepreneurs as they help shape the future of work and life.”

PerkinElmer’s customer lab at the Velocity Garage is their second entry into the Waterloo Region scientific and business community. In 2016 PerkinElmer launched its software innovation outpost in Kitchener which focuses on envisioning and enabling the lab of the future.

The Velocity Garage incubates a rapidly growing number of deep tech companies whose technologies often rely on the sciences -- specifically biology, chemistry, or physics -- to enable product features. The PerkinElmer lab will now provide early access to critical instruments and software, helping Velocity expand the unique value they bring to clients.

“Access to scientific instruments and solutions for startups is often difficult because early-stage companies don’t yet have the capital to purchase them. With the new PerkinElmer lab in-house at Velocity, entrepreneurs will now be able to use these technologies which helps accelerate product and business development,” says Adrien Côté, Velocity’s Science Lead and Business Advisor who supports and advises many of Velocity’s deep-tech, deep-science companies.

Jay Shah, Director of Velocity, added, “The use and popularity of our existing product development labs, testing and fabrication equipment at Velocity is already nothing short of astounding in terms of what it allows early-stage startups to accomplish. The addition of the PerkinElmer lab will further expand on the breadth and depth of this highly differentiated startup product development capability. We are confident that our entrepreneurs will leverage the state-of-art PerkinElmer tools to build high-impact, globally competitive products & companies.”
