While exposure to tobacco smoke is a key factor in the development and progression of COPD, exposure to air pollutants in the home and workplace, genetic factors and respiratory infections also play a significant role."

Across the United States, approximately 16 million people suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Millions more have the condition, but have not yet been diagnosed. According to some estimates, over 3.5% of Puerto Rico’s population currently suffers from the disease.

COPD includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis and in some cases asthma. The CDC reports that COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, claiming many lives each year. According to figures from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it is also the fourth leading cause of disability and Americans are projected to spend $49 billion on COPD-related patient care by 2020.

“While exposure to tobacco smoke is a key factor in the development and progression of COPD, exposure to air pollutants in the home and workplace, genetic factors and respiratory infections also play a significant role,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Not smoking and avoiding air pollutants in the home and work environment is something that is within our control to help prevent new cases of COPD and help those already suffering from the condition. At Zimmetry, our industrial hygiene, indoor air quality and building science professionals offer air testing services to  identifying indoor pollutants, allergens and other respiratory irritants that can cause or aggravate COPD. If environmental tests identify potential exposure risks, steps can then be taken to mitigate or eliminate exposure to the substance or substances. These services are available in Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and throughout the Caribbean.”

Zimmetry has also sponsored an educational video about COPD, indoor allergens and pollutants that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/tv-rKdXoW5A
