UPDATE: Winter storm waiver in effect for D.C., New York metros as Delta proactively cancels flights

A weather waiver remains in effect for cities in the path of the winter system as it continues east, bringing snow and mixed precipitation to the D.C. and New York metro areas Wednesday.

Delta has proactively cancelled approximately 150 Delta Connection regional flights ahead of inclement weather spanning across the eastern third of the U.S., with additional schedule adjustments likely as the system develops through the day.

The airline’s Meteorology team in Delta’s Operations & Customer Center are keeping a watchful eye on the timing of the winter precipitation as it moves up in the New England area Wednesday evening and eventually offshore. Temperatures are forecasted to rise as the system moves towards the Atlantic coast, turning snow showers for D.C., New York and Boston to rain during the overnight hours.

Delta has proactively issued a weather waiver for cities in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions ahead of a winter system sweeping east from the Central Plains.

The waiver allows customers with travel scheduled on Wednesday, Feb. 20, through cities in the New York metros and Washington D.C. airports, the ability to make a one-time change to their travel plans without incurring a fee.

Delta’s Meteorology team in the airline’s Operations & Customer Center is keeping an eye on the expansive storm, which is forecasted to bring frozen and mixed precipitation to the Mid-Atlantic area Wednesday morning and into the Northeast region by the afternoon.

The D.C. area will likely see up to 4 inches in the region, while the New York area is expected get 1-3 of inches of snow before switching to ice pellets as temperatures along the coast warm up in the afternoon hours and overnight into Thursday. Delta’s operations teams are evaluating possible flight schedule adjustments for Wednesday, with Delta Connection regional flight cancellations likely as the storm approached the east coast.

Delta’s Minneapolis and Detroit hubs will also feel some effects from the weather system, with four to six inches of snow accumulating in MSP through the day Wednesday, and trace accumulations in DTW during the afternoon hours. The airline does not anticipate significant impact at either hub, but is monitoring operations closely together with the latest forecast model data.
