Workers regularly exposed to latex can become sensitized and develop allergic reactions to certain proteins found in natural rubber latex products.

According to some reports, anywhere from less than 1% to as much as 5% of the U.S. population is believed to have a latex allergy and is sensitized to exposure. However, some populations are known to have a much higher risk of the condition. For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that studies indicate that between 8% and 12% of the nation’s healthcare workers are sensitized to exposure to latex. Other occupations, such as housekeepers, hairdressers and workers in industries that manufacture latex products are also at increased risk.

Workers regularly exposed to latex can become sensitized and develop allergic reactions to certain proteins found in natural rubber latex products. Some of the most common items include latex gloves and bandages. Exposure can occur through skin contact, but it is also possible to be exposed through the air. Latex proteins can become fastened to the lubricant powder used in some gloves and other products. This is especially true when workers change gloves and the protein and powder particles can easily become airborne.

“Common symptoms of a latex allergy include skin redness, hives and itching; respiratory symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, scratchy throat and asthma; and in rare cases, sever and life threatening reactions,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “In Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean, Zimmetry Environmental identifies latex and other common indoor allergens in healthcare and other occupational settings, as well as in schools and homes. If test results indicate its presence, there are steps that can be taken to eliminate or mitigate future exposure concerns.”
