Boston, MA November 9, 2006 – Active Broadband Networks, a pioneering developer of subscriber service management and broadband demand planning systems, announced immediate availability of the Fair Use Profiler. The Fair Use Profiler is the first is a series of applications developed for the Active Resource Manager. It automates the process of classifying subscribers by service usage enabling operators to employ resource control mechanisms that ensure all subscribers enjoy the benefits of high-speed broadband service.

“An extremely small number of subscribers consume the majority of broadband network resources”, said Adam Dunstan, President of Active Broadband Networks. “The Fair Use Profiler allows operators to identify those subscribers based upon their service plan or service tier during times when their use impacts the experience enjoyed by the majority of subscribers”.

The Fair Use Profiler identifies conditions when individual subscriber uses could impact the experience of the majority of subscribers. During these periods, it profiles individual subscribes based upon configurable per service tier thresholds and timers. Subscribers exceeding these configurable thresholds are added to the profiled subscriber list.

In addition to providing management information, the profiled subscriber list can be sent to systems or devices that dynamically implement per-subscriber usage policies to control applications contributing to persistent, high volume usage. By combining information from the Active Resource Manager and the Fair Use Profiler with PacketCable™ Multimedia Policy Systems, operators can manage subscriber usage to resource optimize the delivery of Internet and other emerging enhanced services. The same information makes application aware Deep Packet Inspection devices subscriber service and DOCSIS network aware while accurately ensuring all subscriber traffic is identified.

The Fair Use Profile is an accurate and flexible solution ensures subscribers are not indiscriminately impacted irrespective of subscribed service class or network resource availability. The Active Broadband Networks solution allows operators and their customers to enjoy the benefit of high-speed broadband services.
