Quote: An insightful half memoir and half assessment of a diocesan priest about the present situation of the Church

For priests, deacons and even laymen who want to do some serious reading after the Year of the Clergy and Consecrated Persons, they should pick up the book by Rev. Michael J. Novick titled “We Don’t Live in Eden: (But We Can Once Again – Believe Me)” (Xlibris; 2014).
“We Don’t Live in Eden” deals with Rev. Novick’s journey to the priesthood and his thoughts and views on the tough challenges facing the Catholic Church. He opens up about the vocations crisis, sex abuse scandals, same-sex marriage, celibacy, and lukewarm Catholics. Modern society’s perception of the Church concerns Rev. Novick and he hopes to change that perception.
“I have heard from many people how the church doesn’t work the way it should,” said the priest, “in other words, she doesn’t have an open mind and she doesn’t bow to society’s wishes. I have heard that the Church has too many rules and regulations that don’t fit in society too.”
Rev. Novick asserts the relevance of the Church and emphasizes its divine origin and mission. “However, in all of that, I tell you that the Church DOES work. It is the Church that was, is, and always be built on the work of Jesus Christ alive among us.”
The good priest does his best to convey his message to his intended readers without proselytizing or sounding authoritative. After all, this is a heartfelt assessment of an average diocesan priest who feels heartbroken about the issues hounding the Church.
“My hope is that as you read, you learn about, and pray for, the Church and its future,” said Rev. Novick. “I hope your understanding of the Church will be enhanced by reading my book.”
