The European Audiovisual Observatory recently organized a conference entitled “Brexit: Impact, Challenges and Chances for the European Audio-Visual Sector” in order to provide insights on the UK’s role in the EU audiovisual market and related impacts of Brexit. The Strasbourg-based observatory has now made available the results and documentation of the conference on their website.

How crucial is the UK’s influence on the EU’s audiovisual sector? How many households do UK media companies reach with their different platforms and what does the UK’s role mean for the EU with regard to Brexit? Questions such as these have been addressed and discussed at a public conference organized by the European Audiovisual Observatory in Brussels, Belgium.

The online conference documentation, provides comprehensive figures relating to the “weight” of the UK in the European audiovisual market compared to other EU28 countries, but also sheds light on the economic relevance of exports, imports, co-productions and the circulation of audiovisual services between the UK and other European countries.

The conference featured an expert panel consisting of Maja Cappello (European Audiovisual Observatory), Harriet Finney (British Film Institute), Ross Biggam (Discovery Networks), Gilles Fontaine ( European Audiovisual Observatory), Maria Donde (OFCOM) and Alejandro Flores (100 Balas - Mediapro). The entire conference can be viewed online here.

Apart from presenting facts related to the UK’s market influence, the expert panel discussed questions centered around the role of EU legal frameworks and how European professionals can continue working with their UK counterparts in a post-Brexit scenario.

More information can be found on the website of the European Audiovisual Observatory.
