Harminder Singh Magon Invites Foodies on His Epicurean Journey Through His Cookbook

The Kenyan-born and now Ontario-based culinary expert inherited at an early age his love of fine foods from his forefathers who introduced him to centuries-old Moghul culinary traditions. “My grandfather and my dear dad were the two giants and true foodie souls,” Magon told DissDash. “They were the greatest inspiration for me who influenced me at a very early age to get me into the kitchen to cook and explore the wonderful world of exotic cuisines.”
When he emigrated to Canada in 1966, he missed his mother’s home cooking and craved for traditional food. He attempted to cook some of the family recipes but with no success. He realized he had to be a little bit smarter and start by compiling recipes, ideas, and tips that his forefathers left him. This he did to leave behind not only a culinary legacy but also something for the next generation that is interested in food and cooking.
“My Epicurean Journey” takes foodies on a gastronomic journey through South Asia, the Far East, Africa, and beyond, all of which reflects Magon’s heritage and global culinary experiences. The cookbook showcases recipes and cuisines that Magon loves and enjoys, including meat dishes, seafood, vegetarian fares, and even fusion – indeed, something for everybody. He replicates these dishes but also adds his own touches and even concocts recipes in his head when he dines at restaurants.
It took Magon about six years to compile all the recipes in “My Epicurean Journey,” which was launched after he retired from his regular job. Publishing a cookbook seems to be a better option for the chef of Punjabi Sikh descent who admits he does not have the energy to run a restaurant.

About the Author
Harminder Singh Magon is a third-generation Punjabi Sikh from Kenya. His love of fine foods took root at an early age, during which time his forefathers introduced him to the centuries-old culinary traditions of the Moghul era. After pursuing higher studies in India, Magon emigrated to and eventually settled in Canada, where he served as a city planner in Saskatoon for two decades before eventually joining the Canadian Union of Public Employees as its National Anti-Racism Coordinator. All the while, he continued to further cultivate his passion for food by shadowing master chefs, teaching cooking classes, and hosting and producing the popular television program Cook with Mag for almost a decade. Additionally, Harminder Singh Magon has had the honour and privilege of cooking for several renowned Indian celebrities, offering cooking demonstrations for the general public and for charity, and catering for his nieces’ weddings, which included well over five hundred guests each. Magon, now a proud grandfather, currently resides in Ottawa with his wife Sona.
