California Residents Learn about National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week

LA Testing provides analytical services, sampling supplies and easy-to-use test kits to identify lead exposure risks to safeguard children, families and workers.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

From October 21st through the 27th, National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) will be recognized in California and throughout the rest of the nation. The weeklong campaign is described by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a call to bring together individuals, organizations, industry, and state and local governments to help increase lead awareness by using their efforts and collaborations to reduce childhood exposure to lead.

This is of critical importance as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that childhood lead poisoning is considered the most preventable environmental disease among young children. However, approximately half a million U.S. children have blood lead levels above 5 micrograms per deciliter, the reference level at which the CDC recommends public health actions be initiated.

“Lead is a highly toxic heavy metal that can harm the brain and other vital organs if it gets into the human body,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “The primary exposure risk for most children is due to lead-based paints that were used in so many houses and apartments throughout California up until 1978. Lead poisoning is often caused by children accidently swallowing or breathing in the lead dust created by this old paint that has cracked and chipped. Elevated levels of lead in drinking water has also come under increased scrutiny in recent years.”

Helping to spread the word about National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week in California are the environmental experts at LA Testing. In addition to analyzing environmental samples for lead and offering lead test kits, their laboratory specialists recently sponsored an educational video NLPPW that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/4AwFRXxi36Q.
