ABIH® Elects New Vice Chair and Board of Director Members for 2019 and Beyond

The American Board of Industrial Hygiene® (ABIH®) administers the internationally recognized Certified Industrial Hygienist® (CIH®) and Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP®) programs.

The American Board of Industrial Hygiene® is pleased to announce Cynthia Hanko, CIH® as the new Vice Chair-elect of the ABIH® Board of Directors for 2019.

The American Board of Industrial Hygiene® is pleased to announce Cynthia Hanko, CIH® as the new Vice Chair-elect of the ABIH® Board of Directors for 2019. She will succeed Dirk Yamamoto, PhD, CIH®, CSP®, PE, who will become ABIH Chair; Jeffrey Miller, PhD, CIH®, CSP®, who will become Past Chair, and David Roskelley, CIH®, CSP®, who will be rotating off the board as a former Past Chair. Ms. Hanko will become ABIH’s Chair for a term that runs from January 1st to December 31st, 2020.

Cynthia Hanko, CIH is a Senior Health, Safety, and Environmental Engineer with Honeywell International Inc. Cynthia provides Industrial Hygiene support to the Honeywell Aerospace locations in addition to being the Operational Excellence Leader for the Aerospace Health, Safety, Environment, and Facilities Organization.  She has over 15 years’ experience providing Industrial Hygiene and Safety support for a variety of manufacturing companies from Semiconductor to Pharmaceutical Industries.

The ABIH Board also elected three new board members during its September meeting.  The three new members of the 2019 – 2022 Board include:

  • Kari Brisolara, ScD, MSPH, QEP® is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the LSU Health Sciences Center, School of Public Health in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Brisolara is an environmental health scientist specializing in waste treatment and reuse. She has over 10 years of academic public health experience including publishing over 20 refereed articles and delivering over 100 talks on waste treatment, reuse, disinfection and environmental public health at conferences both U.S. based and international. In addition to research and continuing education programs, she has also participated in community-based projects related to migrant worker health in Georgia, the development of congressional position statements on aspects of the Farm Bill and EPA’s Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation Rule, and is a returned Peace Corps Volunteer.
  • Thomas (Tom) Grumbles, CIH®, FAIHA has over 40 years of experience in industrial hygiene and product safety compliance and program management in the chemical industry. He has led the implementation of global product stewardship programs and REACH compliance efforts for the Global Chemicals business of Sasol. Mr. Grumbles also led compliance efforts with chemical regulations in North America under the US Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), state regulations such as California Proposition 65, and multiple Global Chemical regulatory schemes. He has served as the Company Chair of the Health, Products, and Science Policy Committee at the American Chemistry Council, President of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, and the International Occupational Hygiene Association. He is a 2015 winner of the AIHA Distinguished Service Award and currently the Past President of the Product Stewardship Society.
  • Cheryl (Cheri) Marcham PhD, CSP®, CIH®, CHMM®, FAIHA is an Assistant Professor and Program Chair for the Master of Science in Occupational Safety Management degree program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She was previously the Environmental Health and Safety Officer for the University of Oklahoma for over 26 years. Dr. Marcham has served on the Board of Directors of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals®. She is a frequent speaker on both the health concerns and indoor air quality impacts of electronic cigarettes and on occupational safety and health certifications. She has contributed to a chapter in the current edition of ASSP’s Safety Leadership and Professional Development text and to two journal articles in Professional Safety on the certification and examination process.
