Reading and feeding in Cary

WEBWIRE

Last month, our Cary team in North Carolina spent a day volunteering for local literacy charity Read and Feed, which supports children whose literacy attainment levels are deemed to be below the national US benchmark.

Working in partnership with Wake County schools, Read and Feed identifies children at risk or below the reading level, and using repurposed motorhomes as mobile classrooms, travels to their neighborhoods to offer tutoring in reading, along with a meal.

Read and Feed currently serves 600 children each year, across 24 sites in Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, Rolesville, Knightdale, and Zebulon, and provides more than 33,000 books for children in the program.

On their volunteering day, OUP employees packed 600 book bags filled with free school supplies, to be distributed to children participating in the program.

Reflecting on the session, volunteer and OUP Marketing Assistant Nicole Taylor commented: ‘Our entire team has a heart for making a difference in the community. Serving at Read and Feed to help with their back-to-school preparations was a wonderful opportunity to give back, bond as a team, and further advance OUP’s mission of promoting excellence in education.’

You can find out more about Read and Feed on their website.
