ROME (Momentum)-Wednesday, October 25, 2006

EMC Corporation, the world leader in information management and storage, today announced that it has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the “Leaders” quadrant of the “Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Content Management, 2006” (1) report. Gartner Inc.’s Magic Quadrant positioned EMC’s enterprise content management (ECM) software suite in the leaders’ quadrant based on its ability to execute and completeness of vision.

The full report, including EMC’s position in the “Leaders” quadrant, can be viewed at http://www.emc.com/news/analyst/magic_quadrant/ecm.jsp.

“We believe today’s announcement builds on the success EMC has achieved as the global enterprise content management leader,” said Dave DeWalt, President and Executive Vice President of Customer Operations and Content Management Software at EMC Corporation. “We’ve doubled the size of our content management software business since the acquisition of Documentum a few years ago and were named the number one content management leader based on software market revenue according to a leading analyst firm (2). We will continue to develop and deliver ECM solutions that can be easily deployed and integrated with customers’ existing enterprise environments.”

The EMC Documentum enterprise content management family of software products is based on a unified platform that enables customers to improve productivity, lower cost, mitigate risks and ensure compliance by optimizing work processes and leveraging their information assets. In the past year, EMC has added information rights management, enterprise archiving and business process management (BPM) capabilities to its ECM software portfolio. “As the largest university in the United Kingdom dedicated to distance learning, our primary goal is to ensure our students have the best online distance learning experience possible,” said Jed Cawthorne, ECM Program Manager at The Open University. “The EMC Documentum platform is being integrated as part of our IT infrastructure alongside EMC storage management, virtualization and security products, and it offers the most comprehensive set of ECM features. It is enabling us to provide staff with a more collaborative environment for the development and production of all learning materials, regardless of content type or delivery method, either by traditional print or online via our Virtual Learning Environment. The OpenLearn Project is using the EMC Documentum eRoom collaborative environment to repurpose more than 800 hours of learning materials that will be made available for free from www.open.ac.uk/openlearn.”

“Leaders” in Gartner Inc.’s Magic Quadrant have the highest combined scores for their ability to execute and completeness of vision. They’re currently doing well and are prepared for the future with a clearly articulated vision. In the context of content management, they have strong channel partners, a presence in multiple regions, consistent financial performance, broad platform support and good customer support. In addition, they dominate in one or more technology or vertical market. Leaders can deliver a comprehensive ECM suite by having all six core components and proven enterprise scalability. Greater emphasis was given this year to suite integration (for example, a common user interface, common code base and single repository), demonstrated enterprise deployments, integration with other business applications and content repositories, and a vertical process/solutions focus.

During his keynote at the EMC Momentum enterprise content management user conference yesterday in Rome, Dave DeWalt outlined EMC’s information infrastructure strategy and industry drivers that influence it. DeWalt highlighted ECM trends including the unification of storage, content management, capture and archive; a common repository for storing all unstructured assets; and the importance of protecting and securing content. In support of the latter, DeWalt noted that the EMC Documentum platform is now certified to work with the RSA Access Manager web access management software.

The Magic Quadrant is Gartner Inc.’s opinion and is an analytical representation of a marketplace at and for a specific time period. It measures vendors against Gartner defined criteria for a marketplace. The positioning of vendors within a Magic Quadrant is based on the complex interplay of many factors. Gartner does not advise enterprises to select only those firms in the “Leaders” quadrant. In some situations, firms in the Visionary, Challenger, or Niche Player quadrants may be the right matches for an enterprise’s requirements. Well-informed vendor selection decisions should rely on more than a Magic Quadrant.
