California Company Recalls Imported Food Product due to Potential Microbial Contamination

LA Testing provides comprehensive food testing services to identify Salmonella and other pathogens to help prevent illnesses and costly product recalls.

Recently, a California importer of Asian foods issued a recall of a frozen grated coconut product due to contamination concerns. The bagged product was imported from the Philippines and shipped to retail locations in northern California beginning in February of 2018.

The company recall notice, posted by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), states the product lot is being recalled, “…because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”

“In this instance, the contamination issue was discovered through testing conducted by the State of California Department of Public Health while the agency investigated reported illnesses,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “At LA Testing, we assist food importers and distributors with product testing services to help prevent damaging recalls from occurring in the first place. Routine microbial testing can identify contaminants, such as Salmonella and E. coli, in imported raw ingredients or finished products before they reach consumers. Testing is instrumental for preventing illnesses, costly recalls and the legal expenses so often associated with outbreaks due to foodborne illnesses.”
