A Special Documentary for Specially-abled Children

Earth Angels,” co-authored by Karen Nicksich and Miguel Juarez, is a photo documentary chronicling the lives of “specially-abled” children.  Illustrated with striking photography and insightful interviews, the book places the spotlight on families who share the joys and challenges of living with a child that has above average needs.

The book contains narratives of earth angel children based on what their families have shared.  It features personal stories to help readers understand the love, frustration, and lessons families have learned from their children.

It also highlights beautiful photographs by Scott Butner, a versatile photographer who excels at capturing his subject’s moods and personalities.

Heritage University social work students Ana Tapia and Delaney Helmerson provided research assistance for Nicksich.  The pair assisted with interviews and photo sessions with the families, and helped sort through 1,500 images to select the ones featured in the book.

The authors aim to give readers an insight as to how spirituality and faith play an important component in the lives of these families.  This is a must-read book and an exceptional teaching tool for teachers, parents, and anyone else working with “specially-abled” children and adults.

Earth Angels is a book about community, empowerment, self-expression, self-esteem, and love.  It is a book about abilities, not disability.  I am very thankful for the opportunity to work with Miguel Juarez and Heritage University on this book,” Nicksich said.

The book was featured at the biggest book events in North America, BookExpo America and BookCon 2018 on May 31-Jun 3, 2018 at The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.
