Viranda Slappy, author of “Generation Impact: An American Family’s Turmoil,” brings in her unique personal touch in depicting an African-American family’s struggles in a time of collective intolerance. Set in the 1940s, the author’s first fiction novel unravels the day-to-day of the Turners—a family unit of nine caught in a vicious cycle of inequality and discrimination.

Thomas Turner marries Willie Mae at the age of fifteen and fathers seven children. The Civil Rights movement, at that time, is just starting to gain momentum. Not many opportunities are given to a man of color like Thomas. Because of this, his loved ones become easy targets of his frustrations and bear the brunt of his violent streaks. A portrait of man who is unable to overcome his own demons. They get in the way of him being able to provide a safe home and raise a respectable family. It’s a specific period in history where racial discrimination is a belief system that most African-American families are trapped in.

The book mirrors the quality of life endured by minority families during that time. With the author’s well-researched story foundation and her personal experiences, it serves as a beacon of hope for those who are left with none. Viranda believes that raising a family is a very difficult task, it comes with many challenges. But families can overcome trials and tribulations through God’s grace.
