Workers in Puerto Rico Learn About Secondary Lead Exposure Risks for Family Members

Zimmetry Environmental provides testing, consulting and compliance services to identify and mitigate occupational and environmental lead hazards.

Lead exposure can occur in most industry sectors across the islands, including construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation, remediation and even recreation.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that across Puerto Rico and the rest of the United States, there are approximately 804,000 workers in general industry and an additional 838,000 workers in construction that are potentially exposed to lead.

While there are a number of rules and regulations in place that are meant to protect these workers from exposure risks, they are not always followed due to a lack of knowledge or negligence. If workers have not been trained about the dangers of lead exposure or if workers have no idea they are being exposed to lead, they, and even their families, could be at risk of lead poisoning. The Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR) states that indeed a secondary source of lead exposure for workers’ families can take place if workers bring home lead-contaminated dust on their hair, skin, clothes, shoes and even tools.

“There are so many jobs across Puerto Rico and the Caribbean where workers could be exposed to lead dust or fumes,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “These jobs range from building repair and demolition work to metal production and recycling to name just a few. In fact, lead exposure can occur in most industry sectors across the islands, including construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation, remediation and even recreation.”

Preventing exposure is the only way to prevent lead poisoning. This is why it is so critical that workers and management understand exposure risks and how to determine if lead or other toxic heavy metals are a potential hazard.

Testing materials, environments and worksites for these exposure risks are the industrial hygiene experts at Zimmetry Environmental. They offer comprehensive lead testing and consulting services that recognize the unique rules and regulations in Puerto Rico and throughout other parts of the Caribbean. These services protect workers, families, the environment, and help to keep companies in regulatory compliance. Zimmetry also recently sponsored an educational video about secondary lead exposure risks for workers’ families that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/TSNaDLmdwXI
