Pacific Foods Pledges to Reach Zero Waste Goal by 2021

TUALATIN, Ore. – WEBWIRE

For the past three decades, Pacific Foods has been hard at work reducing its percentage of waste to landfill with one goal in mind: zero waste. Today, the maker of soups, broths and plant-based beverages announced its intent to reach that goal by 2021.

Currently, 86 percent of Pacific’s waste is either recycled or repurposed – a number that has steadily grown over the past few years thanks to creative solutions brought forward by Pacific’s sustainability department. The company created its own recycling center onsite to help divert more than 500 tons of material each month. Once up and running, Pacific invited employees to bring in tough-to-recycle items, e.g. electronics, to be disposed of safely and responsibly. The company continues to manage and refine complementary recycling programs as well.

  • Wastewater solids and fats are sent to biogas facilities, where they are broken down by microorganisms and combusted to generate electricity
  • 100% of food scraps are converted into animal feed or compost
  • Hundreds of thousands of pounds of okara, a byproduct of crushing soybeans for non-dairy beverages, are made into high-protein animal feed each year

“Closing the loop on organic materials means directing byproducts to their highest potential use,” said James Louderman, sustainability manager. “It’s the best way to do right by the farmers who grow ingredients for us – ensuring that as little of the nutritional energy they produce is wasted. It’s just the right thing to do.”

Pacific’s dedicated sustainability team is tasked with improving the company’s energy efficiency and finding opportunities for it to reduce, repurpose and recycle its waste. Ten years in, the team has reduced the amount of waste going to landfills by more than half, from 40 percent to 14 percent.
