A really compelling, well-written book. The writer brings personal passion and vivid color to the fascinating struggles of post-colonial Africa, such that it’s hard to put this book down. While anyone will enjoy this story, it will resonate particularly with those who’ve had overseas postings in the highly structured global corporate world.

Hans van den Houten recalls his first year of employment with Royal Dutch Shell through his memoir, “One Year in Africa.”

The author recalls his first assignment in Congo and Burundi. This gripping personal narrative is set in Africa in the 1960s. Known to be the “Year of Africa,” 1960 was the year seventeen African nations gained independence.  He vividly narrates the challenges, risks, and misadventures he faced as an expatriate living in a country that was trying to come to terms with its new postcolonial reality.

Amazon customer Donald L. reviews the book as: “a really compelling, well-written book. The writer brings personal passion and vivid color to the fascinating struggles of post-colonial Africa, such that it’s hard to put this book down. While anyone will enjoy this story, it will resonate particularly with those who’ve had overseas postings in the highly structured global corporate world.”

“One Year in Africa” was featured by LitFire Publishing at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2017. The event took place at the Messe Frankfurt, located in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It ran from October 11 to 15.
