A patient at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London was the first in the world to have their lung tumor treated using a unique combination of innovative techniques that avoid puncturing the skin. The procedure combined the use of a hybrid operating room equipped with the latest imaging technologies, a catheter inserted through the mouth and guided using GPS-like navigation, and a targeted dose of microwave energy, administered directly to the tumor without making a cut.

“At Philips we are committed to improve patient outcomes and enhance care pathways,” said Ronald Tabaksblat, Business Leader Image Guided Therapy Systems at Philips. ”Lung cancer is a complex disease and we are motivated to give patients access to a new minimally-invasive treatment options like this successful first procedure. We are delighted with this remarkable milestone and glad that Philips’ imaging technology and visualization software in the hybrid OR was an important enabler. We look forward to continuing the ground-breaking collaboration with St Bartholomew’s hospital and stay committed to improving the journey of patients affected by lung cancer.”
