Stephen E Arnold said, "Bad actors are adopting and using technology to commit crimes, disrupt targeted societies, and forment unrest. The challenge is to develop systems and methods to allow innovation to take place without endangering lawful citizens and fueling illegal activities."

DarkCyber for May 15, 2018, is now available at www.arnoldit.com/wordpress and on Vimeo at https://vimeo.com/268758291.

Stephen E Arnold’s DarkCyber is a weekly video news and analysis program about the Dark Web and lesser known Internet services.

The stories in the May 15, 2018, program cover a love triangle, the Dark Web assassination service, and a plot that went off the rails. The Dark Web site scammed the would-be wife of an already married man for $10,000 in Bitcoin. The 20-year jail sentence allows time to think about the difference between the Dark Web online services and the capabilities of law enforcement.

The second story reports about a new report from the Henry Jackson Society about the Dark Web and related topics. The free report “Terror in the Dark” explains the varied uses bad actors make of the hidden Internet. The discussion of the use of digital currencies instead of the Hawala system as a mechanism for funding certain activities is interesting. The report does not provide details about how digital currency transactions can be deanonymized. This information will form the core of Stephen E Arnold’s “Deanonymizing Digital Currency Transactions” at the Telestrategies ISS conference in Prague in early June 2018.

Stephen E Arnold said, “Bad actors are adopting and using technology to commit crimes, disrupt targeted societies, and forment unrest. The challenge is to develop systems and methods to allow innovation to take place without endangering lawful citizens and fueling illegal activities.”

The third story summarizes information in an online service’s report about the manufacturers of cell site simulators. These are devices which can be used to disrupt or intercept mobile traffic. The report explains the scope of the disruption the use of cell site simulators can cause.

The fourth story describes the map of the Dark Web produced by DarkOwl, based in Denver, Colorado. The map makes it easy to determine how many Dark Web sites are engaged in a particular activity.

The final story profiles a New Zealand teen who set up a drug dealing operation. Controlled substances came to him via the Dark Web. He used digital currency to buy these drugs. He also used a middle man or cut out to receive the parcels containing the drugs. His lawyer explained that the teen was naive. The court did not agree, sentencing him to 27 months in prison.
