Author Donna Mcnamara Describes Vigilantes on her Book

Roundup,MT – WEBWIRE

When you come across the word, ’vigilante,’ what comes to your mind? Someone good or bad? Does peace come with a price to pay? At what cost?
Lying in south western Montana are the towns of Virginia City and Nevada City. In 1864 the towns possessed the lure of instant wealth, excitement, and adventure that came from gold mines. Along with this excitement came danger-danger posed by men of unsavory character who would not stop at anything to get what they desired. Five men who were residents of the towns fought back by forming a Vigilance Committee with the goal of bringing justice to the men who terrorized the towns. There have been many theories throughout the years of how the vigilantes financed their quest to bring law and order to the territory of Montana.

Donna McNamara’s “A Birth of Justice: The Vigilantes of Virginia City” explores the work of John Lott as territorial treasurer, author of the Vigilante Oath, and bookkeeper of the Ferreting Fund, a register of names and amounts of money donated to the Vigilantes to restore law and order.

Here’s an excerpt from the book, “What kind of men were these vigilantes? Were they men seeking Justice for crimes that had been committed? Or were they men who had scores to settle with the men they hanged? Were they men who out for personal gain? These are questions that many people have attempted to answer, but they are not ones that I will deal with here. I have another question. How did the vigilantes finance their quest for bringing law and order to the territory of Montana?”
This book will definitely change how you look at vigilantes. This book does not in any way legitimize nor promote the actions of these vigilantes - rather it promotes to explore the funding of the organization provided by citizens of Alder Gulch; ordinary people who refused to live in an environment where terror reigned, and they feared for their lives and livelihoods.

“You see, some people are willing to pay a price for peace no matter what the cost.”
