Avar H. James worked as a teacher in the Memphis City Schools. She once worked in the Tennessee Department of Education as an education consultant. James is an active member of Bible Study Fellowship and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She also serves as a deaconess at the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee.
