Mercy Health Partners First to Complement Enterprise IT Strategy with Leading Physician Practice Solutions

Malvern, Pa., Oct 17, 2006, Continuing to highlight the success of its partnership with NextGen Healthcare, Siemens Medical Solutions (www.usa.siemens.com/medical ) announces today that Catholic Healthcare Partners has signed an agreement with Siemens to be their sole source provider of NextGen Healthcare’s electronic medical record (NextGen® EMR) and enterprise practice management (NextGen® EPM) solutions. Mercy Health Partners (MHP) of Toledo, Ohio will be the first in the system to implement the NextGen solutions, enabling MHP to establish a framework for interoperability across acute and ambulatory environments, ultimately helping to improve clinical efficiencies and workflow, reduce costs, and enhance the quality of patient care.

“Through our Siemens partnership, we’re able to leverage both Siemens’ and NextGen’s combined expertise in their respective markets to maximize the return on our IT investments,” said Jim Albin, chief information officer, Mercy Health Partners. “In selecting NextGen for our outpatient environments, we are furthering our commitment to providing our physicians and clinicians with the technology and clinical decision support tools that will help us deliver safe, high-quality patient care across our entire enterprise.”

A 2006 “Most Wired” honoree, MHP’s partnership with Siemens is central to its electronic health record (EHR) strategy, which leverages Siemens INVISION(R) clinical IT solutions including computerized physician order entry (CPOE). As an integrated delivery network, MHP will implement NextGen EMR, which was recently certified by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT), across its affiliated facilities to optimize clinical and financial workflow throughout the MHP continuum of care.

“The end goal for every healthcare facility is to deliver safe, superior patient care,” said Ken Bertka, MD, medical director for Information Services, Mercy Health Partners. “Implementation of our EHR has required that every clinical process taking place in the hospital be reviewed and improved. We’re incorporating evidence-based guidelines into our care processes and are among the small percentage of hospitals in the country successfully using CPOE. In expanding our technology initiatives beyond the acute care setting, we are able to connect our physicians, and others who continue to care for patients post-discharge, to the latest patient information and results and provide streamlined, electronic scheduling of inpatient and ambulatory tests. This supports our ability to provide the best care possible for every patient.”

“As the impetus to improve the quality of healthcare accelerates, so does the need to champion healthcare providers’ investments in IT,” said Janet Dillione, president, Healthcare Information Technology Division, Siemens Medical Solutions. “By providing a one-stop source for acute and ambulatory IT solutions and connectivity, our NextGen alliance plays an integral role in advancing our customers’ transition from paper to electronic health records.”

Siemens and NextGen Healthcare announced a strategic partnership in February 2005, uniting Siemens’ expertise in enterprise healthcare IT solutions and advanced medical imaging technologies for the acute and specialty environments with NextGen Healthcare’s industry leadership in ambulatory EMR and practice management software. Several providers are live on combined Siemens/NextGen offerings, including NextGen EPM interfaced with Siemens RIS/PACS, which provides a complete solution for managing imaging workflow from scheduling, registration and interpretation to billing.
