The story starts off with the Crockett family celebrating youngest son Dusty’s soccer championship. Their celebration takes a different turn as a US Navy chaplain arrives to tell them of eldest son Travis’s passing in Afghanistan. It revolves around how the loss impacts their family.

Hardage’s novel mirrors what military families must go through. “The Knock” takes readers on an emotional ride as it shows how each family member reacts to their beloved’s departure.
