Dean R. Eyerly Publishes Exposé on the Life of the ‘Historical’ Jesus

How well do Christians know about Jesus Christ, the son of God? Are the Gospel stories really the true story of Jesus’ life on earth? After all, didn’t John 21:25 say: “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books which were written.”
 
It has been the mission of Ohio-based author Dean R. Eyerly to dig deeper into the background of the ‘historical’ Jesus. He has published three books so far, the latest of which is “Jesus of Nazareth: A Man of His Time” (ReadersMagnet, 2017).
 
The book, which is classified under Christian Books and Bibles and Religion & Spirituality in Amazon, explores the Jesus that most Christians have never known about. The subject of Eyerly’s thought-provoking compendium is the ‘historical’ Jesus… the ‘earthly’ Jesus, not the ‘dogmatic’ Jesus… not only as the son of God but also as the son of human parents.
 
“Jesus of Nazareth” explores the figure of the man Jesus, his virgin birth and resurrection, his life and works, his teaching, miracles and revelation, the politics of his day, his messiahship, his unknown years, and the mystery of his tomb, among others. Eyerly also mentions the story of Joseph and Aseneth, which somewhat reflects a marriage between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, which the author also discusses in his book.
 
Through the book “Jesus of Nazareth,” the author strives to present a picture of Jesus not as a man who came from nothing but as a man who had respect before his ministry. Eyerly gathers his information from a wide range of historical sources and contemporary works on Christian biblical history such as the Pseudepigrapha, the New Testament Apocrypha, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Nag Hammadi library – gospels that the Church Fathers and mainstream Christian scholar consider as non-canonical and gnostic.
 
Why the emphasis on the background of the ‘earthly’, ‘historical’ Jesus? Eyerly believes people ought to know the other aspects of Jesus’ life, not just the ‘divine’ aspect. For this reason, he wrote “Jesus of Nazareth” to drive readers to reflect on the Jesus beyond what is recorded in the canonical gospels and the epistles of the New Testament.
 
“The Gospel stories found in the New Testament give little information about Jesus’ earthly life; scarcely anything is mentioned before he reaches the age of 30 with those years being referred to by scholars as the ‘Missing Years of Jesus’,” said Eyerly in his introduction.
 
“Gospel stories are not biographies, though they contain some biographical information. They are books written by convinced Christians to explain their faith to others. They are quite unlike any other type of ancient literature meaning that they cannot be approached in the same way as other documents.”
