A good adventure story for young persons . . . with an interesting narrative about survival and growing up in a harsh and unforgiving environment. It is a good combination of human interest, adventure and accurate old west lore.

The transition from childhood to adolescence is a difficult time. Guidance by a parent or a guardian is vital as one encounters the physical, mental, and emotional changes brought about by the transition. In Westward Bound, Alone by David Leonard, an orphaned boy named Dan goes through his teenage years in solitude, traveling the historic Oregon Trail during the 1800s.

On the way to Oregon by wagon train, Dan is separated from his sister and foster family. He gets trapped in an underground caravan, sustaining serious injuries. When he escapes, the wagon train has already left and Dan decides to find water and shelter in the vastness of the prairie instead of chasing the wagon train. As he journeys to find his family, Dan meets all kinds of people—miners, trappers, and even Indians.
