Christian Author Linda T. Legg Hopes to Stir Hearts Regarding Society’s Less Fortunate Through Her Book

The teacher-turned-author from the Midwest pens a novel to develop empathy for the less fortunate in young readers.

Anyone who is moved to tears when reading Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist” will surely do the same with Linda T. Legg’s “Street Boy.” Set in the early Nineties, the story is about the titular character, an 8-year-old boy, who lives in a refrigerator box with his Momma, who feeds them both by shoplifting.

“Street Boy” exposes young readers to the harsh realities facing the less fortunate folks like Street Boy and his Momma. Poverty and homelessness are not the only concerns that the author points out in her book, but also drug dealing and alcoholism, which are social ills associated with poverty. The book also brings awareness to the plight of homeless during bad weather. (Street Boy and his Momma have to survive without each other during a blizzard.)

From their struggles, a fairy tale – or a story of hope and dreams – also emerges. Both parent and child are later reunited and they become more determined to change the course of their life. Street Boy promises to his Momma they will someday have a place of their own. As a story of survival and dreams, “Street Boy” touches on multiple themes: affirming the human spirit, choosing life, family, and dreams/hopes.

Linda T. Legg’ “Street Boy” will be displayed at the inaugural New York Rights Fair 2018, which is being billed as the first trade and licensing show dedicated to the buying and selling of international rights as well as the distribution and licensing of content for both adult and children’s titles. The event will be in full force over three days from May 30 to June 1, 2018 at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan, New York City.
