Amsterdam, 27 September 2006 – Elsevier is delighted to announce its partnership with the Institute of Coal Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Science Press, over the publication of the journal New Carbon Materials. This quarterly publication now joins the China Collection on Elsevier’s ScienceDirect® online platform.

New Carbon Materials is a leading Chinese-language journal that publishes research results devoted to the physics, chemistry and technology of those organic substances that are precursors of new carbons, and the materials that may be produced from those organic precursors. The journal has been ranked #1 in the Chinese material science area for the past five years, and was also ranked 4th out of all 6000 Chinese journals indexed by Thomson Scientific ISI in 2005. Translations of the best articles will be included in the China Collection on Elsevier’s ScienceDirect® electronic journal platform.

Deborah Logan, Publisher for Materials Engineering at Elsevier, commented: “Our main goal is the active support and dissemination of scientific exchange and our China Collection is designed to showcase the best quality research coming from China today. New Carbon Materials is one of the best journals in China and we are honoured that the Institute has chosen Elsevier as its preferred publishing partner to extend the reach of this important journal to the widest possible audience".

Dr Yuqin Chen, Associate Editor-in-Chief of New Carbon Materials, added: “Over the 20 years of this journal’s existence, it has become a highly respected title, being indexed by important databases such as ISI, Ei and Chemical Abstracts. However, given the language barrier, it has always been a challenge to reach our international peers. Through our cooperation with Elsevier, our journal will now appear on ScienceDirect®, and reach an audience of millions, who can all read and cite our papers”.

Prof. Peter Thrower, Honorary Editor-in-Chief of New Carbon Materials, and Editor-in-Chief of CARBON added: “I have been associated with New Carbon Materials for over four years during which time it has made advances in its attempt to become an important scientific journal. There is probably more current carbon research in China than in any other country and it is appropriate that there is a Chinese journal on the subject that publishes significant contributions. Making it available on ScienceDirect® will help bring it to the worldwide audience it deserves.”
