Prayers as Armor in the Vietnam War

LitFire Publishing participated in the annual Frankfurt Book Fair held from October 19 to 23, 2016, at Messe Frankfurt (Frankfurt Trade Fair) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. One of the featured books was Martin Latigue’s memoir, How to Pray in Combat When Your Mind Is Off.

In his book, Martin Latigue recounts memories when he got drafted to fight in the Vietnam War. As a devout Christian, Martin had always sought strength and guidance from the Lord. Through every adversity, he relied on prayers to help him endure and survive.

However, praying can be hard when fighting in a war.  As the author describes his experience, “I couldn’t remember the words of the Lord’s Prayer or Psalm 23. I couldn’t pray the words. It wouldn’t come to my mouth. I was using my memory to fight the war, and it was occupying my thoughts.”

How to Pray in Combat When Your Mind Is Off accounts tragic losses of family and friends, but Latigue retains composure in his description of events. The book is thought-provoking as it conjures images from urban life to enemy lines.

About the Author

Martin Latigue lives in Houston, Texas, with his wife, Olga, and they have two sons, Mark and Jerry. He has established businesses in cosmetology, home moving, and janitorial industries. He had served with the First Battalion of the Seventh Cavalry in Company C as forward observer for the Third Platoon.
