Atlanta Legal Nurse Consultant At Oncology Nursing Society Talk About Breast Cancer

Ibrance Use With Postmenopausal Women With Metastatic Breast Cancer

Atlanta, Georgia – WEBWIRE

Atlanta legal nurse consultant Liz Buddenhagen attended the Athens Area Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) educational meeting on September 27, 2016. The topic was centered on first line treatment of postmenopausal women with breast cancer using oral therapy.
About the talk:
Priya Rudolph, MD, a local Athens, Georgia physician, specializes in treating breast cancer. Rudolph briefly described treatments used since 1977 with tamoxifen to the current and best treatments. She particularly discussed Ibrance which can be used for postmenopausal women with metastatic breast cancer.
Ibrance is taken in combination with letrozole, a commonly used hormonal therapy, which delayed disease progression twice longer than letrozole alone. It has been shown that this therapy can result in tumor shrinkage.
Rudolph cited side effects of Ibrance to include decreased white blood cells. She said it is important to monitor blood counts and fever if it occurs. Another side effect can include pulmonary embolism. Symptoms of pulmonary embolism can be shortness of breath, sudden sharp pain that may become worse with breathing, rapid heart rate and rapid breathing. Side effects can also include low red blood cell counts and low platelet counts.
Rudolph mentioned that Pfizer, who produces the medication and sponsored the dinner presentation, has a pathway for doctors who have patients with low income and no insurance to help obtain Ibrance at low or no cost. Information for these pathways are found on website.
