An education research, The Retention aims to gain a better understanding about the factors or conditions that contribute to the retention of first year Black male students at predominantly White private institutions (PWPIs). This book highlights the experiences of three sophomores and three second-semester freshmen at a predominately White private university in the Washington, DC area.
Dr. Yancy employed a qualitative, narrative research designed to find out participants’ pre-collegiate and collegiate experiences through interviews. It is interesting to note also that the author used the Critical Race Theory (CRT) framework by Dr. Shawn Harper and the Retention Model by Dr. Vincent Tinto. This book gives recommendation for university administrators and high school counselors to consider for the education of Black men in the United States of America.
Dr. Yancy’s bookwas featured in LitFire’s booth during BookExpo America (BEA) held last May 11–13, 2016 at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois. BEA is the largest event of booksellers, librarians, retailers, publishers, rights, licensing, and book industry professionals in North America.
