Retired teacher and author Sheila Watkins shares the tale of Sharde in her novel, Still Standing: On the Word of God. Sharde is a girl who had unfortunate events unfold right before her eyes at a young age. The book centers on Sharde’s journey to become who she wants to be with the aid of God.

Sharde’s life does not go as planned after her mother’s death. With her father in prison because of the death of her mother, Sharde has to stand up for her nine siblings. Circumstances may be hard, but she still manages to surpass them and fulfill her life dream—to be a teacher. She grows up to be an inspiration to students, parents, and friends, just like how her teachers have been to her.

The story of Sharde emphasizes the importance of faith. Watkins wants to show readers that life lived with faith in God will overcome any obstacle. She believes that “God loves you just the way you are,” and “creating a path with God will always help you move forward.”

Still Standing is a recommended read for teens and young adults, those who are having trouble with their journey and are lacking self-confidence to persevere.
