Retirement is a stage of life that everyone will experience, however, it’s often overlooked as people see it as being too far in their future to really worry about. Plus, many people see entering retirement as the ‘beginning of the end’ of their life, so want to avoid thinking about it at all costs.
Nonetheless, this inevitable part of life’s journey needs preparation and reinventing yourself after 50 is the best way to prepare for retirement.
People constantly prepare for new stages in life: They prepare and plan marriage, having children, sending children to school, preparing for university, for employment and so on. However, many do not prepare for retirement, they simply dread it instead.
Moving from a working life into retirement can be a huge adjustment without preparation. Some people can feel completely overwhelmed by the transition, and can experience changes to their self-worth, self-esteem, confidence and identity that can contribute to things like depression and feelings of isolation once they’ve left the full time workforce. A former Kiwi financial advisor, Stephen has transitioned into retirement and enjoys every minute, giving back to his community by offering financial education courses and donating the profits of his books to charity. A self-confessed travel fanatic, he combines work with adventure travel holidays.
Stephen started his career as a government employee of New Zealand then became an investment advisor and financial planner. He owned and ran a company for about 25 years which he sold so he could start reinventing himself. He reinvented himself as a financial educator and decided to help people learn what they should have been taught about finances at school.
In retirement, people tend to fall into one of several categories: those who are preparing to retire, those who have already retired and are watching their pennies, and those who have enough for an enjoyable retirement.
Stephen authored the book “Take Charge of Your Money Now” which is aimed to educate people and help them learn how to make the most of their money – whatever their financial goals. Its aim is to encourage people take control of their finances so they will have more financial freedom in later years.
Stephen finds satisfaction and joy in giving the profits from all his books to various charities. A self-confessed adventure traveller, the financial educator had been to many places in his bucket list which he developed while still young, writing down a list of things he wanted to do in the future, and then working towards them.
When not traveling, Stephen is a guest lecturer in a course on money management, works as an independent contractor for a government commission that organizes courses within big companies, or talks to groups of staff consisting of six to 20 people over a 10-week period for three hours a time.
According to Stephen, those who are about to retire should construct a bucket list and make sure it has all the things the person wants to fit in during retirement. Health and fitness should be priorities, otherwise, it’s too easy for retirees to find themselves sitting on a chair of a cruise ship or in their lounge rooms doing nothing.
