When the Danes catch up with him again, he is taken to Denmark and learns his true identity. There he gains two unexpected allies in King Svein’s son Knute, seventeen, and Svein’s sister-in-law, Lady Freya, who help him escape the wrath of the king. Together, they and his friends from England are his companions as he probes the mysteries of a lady underground, his own beginnings, a missing parchment, the enigma of God’s foreknowledge, and the nature of evil.

Ruth Anderson Lawler was born and raised in New England. As a young adult, she migrated west to Wyoming. Later on, she married a rancher and moved to Alaska. There, the couple raised their three children and have lived there most of their lives.
